All exit polls released at the conclusion of the seven-phase 17th general election predicted a second term for Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The counting of votes will take place on May 23.
Most exit polls have predicated a clear majority to BJP-led NDA with nearly or above 300 seats, out of total 542 Lok Sabha seats. Polls are also predicting a clean sweep by NDA in several key states including Bihar, West Bengal, Odisha, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. However, a number of exit polls also predicted a big losses for the BJP in Uttar Pradesh, where it had won 71 seats in 2014, but the saffron party appeared to make major gains in other states.
In southern States barring Karnataka, the BJP is projected to trail far behind opponents. The Congress and its allies are projected to make significant gains compared to the historic low they hit in 2014, but will end up some distance away from the halfway mark of 272 seats in the 543-strong Lok Sabha, according to these polls.
The projected tally for the Congress ranged from 38 to 87 seats. The 38-seat projection would mean the party slipping even further from its all-time low of 44 in 2014, while 87 would mean it nearly doubles its tally and has enough to formally get the title of Leader of the Opposition. That would be small consolation for a party hoping to unseat Narendra Modi as Prime Minister and lead a coalition government in New Delhi.
